Keep Abreast of the Times
When thinking of seasons we think in 3′s (i.e. 3 months per season). In the Chinese 12 Animal Ghanzhi System. Years 4, 5 and 6 (Rabbit, Dragon and Snake) can represent early Summer. Having images, objects and motifs etc. relating to these around your 'place' during this period should be beneficial for Feng Shui purposes. The Year Elements over the same time-period (2011-14) are Yin Metal, Yang Water and Yin Water, respectively. Colours, materials, objects, patterns and shapes relating to Years should take into account Vin/Yang attributions, which further modify both Year Energies and personality types of those born therein.
5 Elements
Details follow of the 10-Year, 5 Element Cycle underpinning the 12-Year Animal Cycle referred to above. 5 Elements repeat sequentially in first Big Yang and then Small Yin Mode with the Year Element (Yin Metal in Rabbit Year 2011) fundamentally modifying Year Energies. In this new 12-Year Cycle (beginning in 2008) Year Animals and Year Elements have been: 2008 Yang Earth Rat; 2009 Yin Earth Ox; 2010 Yang Metal Tiger; 2011 Yin Metal Rabbit. These are followed in 2012 and 2013 by a Yang Water Dragon and Yin Water Snake respectively.
The 5 Elements Productive Cycle
Remember, each Element manifests for 2 consecutive years in first Yang and then Yin mode before producing the next Element in this sequence:
Earth produces/ supports Metal (mined from veins therein);
Metal produces/supports Water (e.g. via pans, pipes and bowls and even melts under intense heat). Yin Metal is Year Element in Rabbit Year 2011-12;;
Water produces/supports Wood (via irrigation and cultivation). Yang Water is Year Element in Dragon Year 2012-13 and Yin Water in Snake Year 2013-14 respectively;
Wood produces/supports Fire (via conflagration);
Fire produces/supports Earth (via its ashes) then, once again Earth produces Metal!
This 10-Year Cycle where each Element supports/produces the next in line produces the changing Year Elements accompanying the 12 Animal Years and individuals' Birth Year Elements and is represented by the pentagon. 5 of these Years will be Yin and 5 Yang, hence the importance of considering these attributions of Year Elements when making relevant calculations.
Their Destructive Cycle:
Earth destroys Water (river banks take away its freedom and force it into predetermined courses);
Water destroys Fire (Fire-fighters all agree!);
Fire destroys Metal (oxy-acetylene torches cut it up, magnesium burns!);
Metal destroys Wood (via axes and saws);
Wood destroys Earth (vegetation covers it up and extracts its nutrients).
Represented by the Pentagram, in this 10-Year elimination Cycle, each Element removes/destroys the next-but-one from the original list.
Yin/Yang
The Yin/Yang aspects of Years are associated with the Year Element rather than the Year Animal. These are attributed to individuals alongside Elemental and Animal connotations at birth. They modulate Elemental energies further, providing the 120 personality-types of Chinese Astrology, compared to the West's bare 12.
5 Elements Yin/Yang Distinctions
Yang (big) Earth might be represented by the whole Planet, Yin (small) Earth by a stone;
Yang (hard) Metal might be Iron and Yin (soft) Metal by Lead (Yin Metal is Rabbit Year 2011-12 Year Element);
Yang (visible) Water is the blue sea in daylight, Yin (invisible) Water is a hidden pool or puddle, black and unseen at night (Yin and then Yang Water are Year Elements of Dragon and Snake Year 2012-14, respectively);
Yang (tall) Wood is a tree, Yin (short) Wood a blade of grass;
Yang (strong) Fire could be the Sun, Yin (weak) Fire a disposable lighter.
In 5 Elements Theory/Wuxing Metal produces/supports Water, the next element, according to their Productive Cycle whilst simultaneously eliminating Wood the next-but-one, via their Destructive Cycle. Thus homeostasis or a 'steady state' is maintained and the Yin/Yang balance achieved over the two-year periods of Year Element manifestation is a vital part of this. Water supports/produces Wood and thus 2014-15 sees the appearance of a Yang Wood Horse-in the space made for it by the preceding Metal Years of the Tiger and Rabbit!
